How we learn in Reception

Phonics

We follow the Read Write Inc (RWI) phonics programme which helps all children learn to read fluently and at speed so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary and spelling. Phonic sessions will be taught daily. Children are also taught 'red words' these are the tricky words that cannot be sounded out, they have to be memorised. Children will bring home red words as we learn them to practise at home. The sound mats below and red words can be found in the attached files. The songs we sing to help to learn the tricky red words are also attached. The Read Write Inc. Lesson videos will also be added as we learn the sounds in school. Our practise videos can be found on our class Padlet - click on the link below

Alphablocks

The Alphablocks series on BBC I Player supports our daily phonics lessons. Children enjoy the animated programmes that correlate to the sound we have learnt that day. These sessions also support segmenting and blending skills learnt during the phonics lessons. Links to use the Aphablocks at home with your child can be found in our home learning tab.

Reading

Reading is at the heart of reception. Children learn to read in a story-rich environment.  We share books every day and learn about the world through a range of fiction and non-fiction books. Books are also within the different areas of the continuous provision to engage children's curiosity and imagination. Please see our topic based books on our topic web ('what we are learning about' tab). Please share books with your child at least three times a week and record it in their reading record. Children's reading is assessed regularly in school and each child will be provided with a reading book that matches their phonetic ability.
