Music Development Plan

At Warmingham CE Primary School, music plays an important role in our curriculum, collective worship and community life. We believe that every child is musical and that music helps pupils to flourish academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually. Through high‑quality teaching and rich musical experiences, we aim to nurture pupils’ God‑given talents and inspire a lifelong love of music.

Our Music Curriculum

Our music curriculum is carefully planned to ensure progression in musical skills, knowledge and understanding from EYFS to Year 6. Children learn to sing, listen, compose and perform music, and to understand how music is created and communicated through pitch, rhythm, tempo, dynamics and notation.

Music lessons across KS1 and KS2 are taught weekly by our specialist music teacher, Claire Henry, who enrich provision and support high‑quality teaching and learning across the school.

Music also plays a key role in developing pupils’ confidence, creativity, teamwork and perseverance, helping them to grow as confident learners and responsible members of the community.

Learning an Instrument

In partnership with Love Music Trust, all children in Years 3, 4 and 5 take part in whole‑class instrumental tuition:

  • Year 3 – Recorder

  • Years 4 and 5 – Clarinet

This ensures that every child has the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, play as part of an ensemble and perform for others.

Children may also choose to take individual or small‑group instrumental lessons, delivered through Love Music Trust or Music for Schools, including:

  • Piano

  • Violin

  • Guitar

We work to ensure that access to instrumental learning is inclusive and that financial barriers do not prevent children from taking part.

Performance and Musical Experiences

Performance is an important and valued part of musical life at Warmingham. Children regularly share their learning through:

  • Singing and playing in collective worship

  • Performances in church services

  • Community events such as Warmingham Wakes

  • Singing with Phoenix Voices, helping to raise funds for the church tower, demonstrating music in action as service and courageous advocacy

We also value exposing children to high‑quality live music. On a rolling programme:

  • EYFS and KS1 visit the Liverpool Philharmonic

  • KS2 pupils have the opportunity to play alongside musicians from the Hallé Orchestra at the Bridgewater Hall, Manchester

These experiences inspire awe and wonder, broaden children’s cultural capital and help them to see what is possible through dedication and teamwork.

Music, Worship and Our Christian Vision

As a Church of England school, music supports our Christian vision and contributes meaningfully to worship and spiritual development. Singing, listening and making music together help pupils to reflect, express joy and gratitude, and feel a strong sense of belonging within our school and church community.

Through music, pupils learn to value one another’s contributions, show respect and dignity, and use their gifts to serve others.

Looking Ahead

We continue to develop our music provision by:

  • Strengthening partnerships with music organisations

  • Increasing access to instrumental learning and ensembles

  • Broadening performance opportunities within school and the community

  • Supporting staff through professional development

Music at Warmingham is joyful, inclusive and ambitious – enabling every child to find their voice and play their part.
