Joaquin Torres Garica

Lesson: Art and design

Class: Badgers (Years 5/6) Year: 2025 - 2026

As Artists, Badgers' Class explored the work of Joaquín Torres García and learned about the ideas that shaped his art. He was strongly influenced by the artist Piet Mondrian, as well as by ancient cultures such as the Greeks and Egyptians. We discovered that ancient people used symbols to tell stories and record important information, and Torres García used symbols in a similar way to communicate his own ideas.

We learned that Torres García wanted his artwork to look flat and organised, often using a grid to structure his compositions. He preferred earthy colours and included symbols inspired by music, religion, horoscopes, traffic, technology, and ancient cultures.

Using this knowledge, we selected Viking Runes that had personal meaning to us and used them as symbols in our own artwork. We then designed puzzle pictures in the style of Joaquín Torres García, applying what we had learned about grids, symbols and colour to create our own meaningful, personal compositions.
