Respecting Others in Our Community - Remembrance Day - November 2020
Our Year Six pupils led our Remembrance Service. Over thirty of our families joined us for the service. We appreciate you taking the time to join us as it made the service more meaningful for the children – thank you. I’m sure you’ll agree they did an amazing job. As part of the service, we heard about Three brave young men from Warmingham gave their lives for their country during World War 1:
Sergeant Richard Ashley
Private William Boulton
Private Joseph Henry Thomas
They are commemorated on the brass plaque on the west wall of St Leonard’s Church. The clock in the clock tower was purchased after the war in their honour. We also learnt about some of our relatives:
Officer Carl Hoyle who served 27 years in the RAF. He completed several tours including some in Afghanistan, Iraq and Bosnia. He even had a mention on the Queen’s Honours List and received a medal from her.
Private Charles Harold William Rawlings served in the 7th Battalion Worcestershire regiment. He was killed in battle.
Private Dennis Rawlings who was killed in battle.
Corporal Stewart Butters served with the Corps of Royal Engineers for 13 years. He received medals for serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Corporal Arthur Walker who was in command of a tank in World War Two. He was involved in the D Day invasion.

What a wonderful end to our term. This week I have seen so many of Otters lights shining bright. We have showcased all the wonderful homework projects. Had hot chocolate for being super star readers and enjoyed lots of Christmas party games. The all time favourite was stick the nose on the snowman! To top the week off we even had a visit from a very special person!

Today we opened the first door on our Advent Kindness Calendar. Our task was to take part in a hearts for homes challenge and so we have been busy decorating these hearts to send to our local care home for the residents to hang on their trees to help cheer them up. We had great fun and the finished decorations look amazing.

In RE this week we have been looking at what is a church. We talked about our church 'St Leonard's' and why it is a special place to Christians. As we are not able to visit in person we looked at pictures of the church and of previous services school have been a part of. The children then created their own artwork.

Today we have looked at the reasons why are donating money for children in need. We talked together about how important it is to let everyone have the opportunity to 'let their light shine' and how some people may be less fortunate than others. We viewed some of the images on the BBC website for children in need and discussed the role support and assistance dogs have.

At the end of every concept, the children complete one of the problems from the Digging Deeper books. The tasks encourage the children to apply their new skills to solve some challenging problems. The children adore them!
